It isn't really a question of which is smarter. Cats in general seem more capable of teaching themselves well. They are stereotypically independent and their learning reflects it. Dogs, on the other hand, whom are still quite smart, can learn much more from training, the way humans learn. If you try hard enough to get the message across to a dog, it will probably understand it. Dogs are also used by the police and rescue workers because they DO have an amazing sense of smell, can be trained to do nearly everything if enough time is spent, can be very aggressive and mean enough to take down criminals, and strong enough to dig or pull people away from danger. Cats aren't physically adapted to that kind of work. Granted, we could start using panthers and tigers, but they aren't domesticized and that could get ugly.

Some cats are just as smart as dogs but, the difference is is that dogs are more of a show off animal while cats are not. Cats are more sophisticated than dogs and just because they dont show off doesn't mean that they are any less intelligent. Its not really fair to judge anything by just what you see on the surface. But, I'm not going to make an assumption that dogs are stupid for eating their own crap either.

Dogs are very intellegent....but never do i underestimate the intelligence of a cat. Cats are more like people they are rebels and refuse sometimes to follow rules. I think people are trained in that they don't make cats do tasks because it is not as easy as training a dog. A dog is a like having a companion and friend. A cat is like having a relative in the house who doesn't do his share---but in rare moments can be the cutest little thing.

Dogs are used by police/rescue workers for their sense of smell and loyalty to humans. They work hard for their rewards. Cats don't need to work hard for their rewards. They know that they just have to lay there and be cute. In fact, rather than humans using them, they use us. Therefore, cats are more intelligent.

theyre both the same its just that cats are smaller and probably wouldnt be able to take on the things dogs can and cats are a lot more lazy...dogs can take on humans and they would rather serve there trainers then sleep all day

Both dogs and cats can be quite intelligent. However, due to a dog's ability to be trained, their size, willingness to please, and sense of smell they make better working animals. Cats can be trained, but are generally more self sufficient, aloof, and nonchalant than dogs. My preference is large dogs.

some breeds of dogs are more intelligent than others - for example BORDER COLLIES are extremely intelligent where as Shih Tzus are not..

cats are in the -mid range of the dog breeds - not as intelligent as a Border Collie - but lots smarter than a Shih Tzu

Cats can survive much better on their own than dogs. However a dog can be trained to do much much more. I would say dogs. They protect you and your home, and can do agility and all sorts of work including heelwork to music, and sniffing out landmines.

i say dogs. My dog used to run away after me and mom left for work and school and got back before we got home. he would also find the weakest link in a chain and tug. He broke through a horse chain, but it took him a year, but still a horse chain. thats pretty good for a medium/small dog!!!
