Yes, and no. I dont' know how much knowledge you have in recording, but here's the thing,

You need to first get a crystal clear signal into your computer, which means a dynamic mic will not work, and you will need to start getting real equipment. (that's if you don't have equipment).

From the signal, you will need to add compression to the recording chain, the mixing stage, AND the mastering stage. Compression settings & ratio's depends on how your voice sounds. You will also need to EQ it a bit during the mixing stage, and then again at the mastering stage.

Programs you can use to help make your music sound better are Izotope Ozone 3, TimeWorks compressor. Those are the ONLY plug-in's i use, other than using my inboard/outboard gear. You also might want to run your whole mix into an exicter. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that you should be compressing & eq'ing your vocals first, before it hits the mixing stage, and then during the mixing stage, you will compress the WHOLE sound & use Izotope to fine tune it. I also use the stand-alone plug in called T-Racks 24 too.

The key to better sound is better equipment AND mixing/mastering techniques. You can only to as good as your equipment lets too though.

Go to my site, and listen to the tracks, you can tell which ones were done in a studio, which ones were done in my new home studio, and which ones were done with a dynamic mic plugged directly into my computer... I have pictures of my small home studio on there if you want to view... BTW, use something better than Pro Tools or Cool Edit Pro/Audition & cakewalk home studio.. Use something like Sonar 5 Producer's, Nuendo 3, or Samplitude.. you might not be able to afford Nuendo 3 or Samplitude, but Sonar 5 is cheap, just $500 dollars (i think it dropped in prices though)

It depends upon what you're making use of to edit your vocals, I'd say typically do not compress it in view that you desire it to sound higher, so typically reverb, small little bit of lengthen/echo, and might be a small little bit of EQing (does not subject such a lot even though). You might additionally use a trace of autotune for those who desired - whether or not or now not you compromise on using it, its used in every single place now, it is as a lot 'dishonest' as including different results.
