Why not! People are people. Why do some people like dogs and some like cats? Its just a matter of preference. Or maybe it has nothing at all to do with the color of the person, but the person themselves! If you like someone you like them, even if they're green. (well, OK, that might be pushin' it) lol

In some case it may just be that the people like each other. People who, say, go to a school where there's a real mix of races learn not to pay much attention to race if they meet someone they like.

In some cases they may like the idea of being "so cool" they don't care about race. Sometimes they may even want to rebel against their parents and date someone of a different race.

I think sometimes it may be as simple as there not being many black girls in a particular area, so the black boys may just learn to date who is available.

Sometimes maybe there's a less simple explanation that could have something to do with some "big, deep, psychological thing", but probably more often not.

Maybe if there are fewer black girls dating white boys it could be because girls need to feel safe and comfortable with a boy, and maybe a young black woman has been raised with enough of the issues associated with being black in this country that she may not feel quite comfortable enough being with a white boy (or less often than the other way around). Somewhere in the back of people's minds there's often the distateful thing of thinking of things like Thomas Jefferson and the affair he had with the young black woman. Maybe many black girls don't want to get into a relationship that could even make them feel like there was a hint of whatever that kind of thing was going on. They may or may not have anything against white boys, but either way they may just have decided that they'll never date one.

Young men and young women have different places they're coming from when it comes to who they'll date. In our ugly history when it comes to race and gender, both women and black people were oppressed in the past by white men. Young black women, however, have the double-whammy thing of being both black and women, and so maybe they more often decide they'd
prefer not to date white guys.

I'm not saying people all hang onto the past and have giant hang-ups about what occurred before any of us or our parents were born, but there can still sometimes be a little cultural residue when it comes to how children are raised or the impact images of the past could have on certain people.

Culturally, for a young black man to date a white girl it could be seen as power. For a white girl to date a black guy it could be seen as being non-racist (and white people have grown up being worried about not being racist or being accused of it). For a young black woman to date a white guy it could be seen as "What - black guys aren't good enough for you? Haven't you been raised to be proud of your own race?" In a time when women and black people have all kind of treasured the idea of being proud of who they are and sticking together as a formerly oppressed group, it is possible young black women feel more allegiance to being a young, black, woman and dating someone who respects and understands why she may prefer to date black guys and not white ones.

Finally, sometimes young women just feel more comfortable with someone of their own race - for no particular reason and not for any intellectual thinking but just because it can seem natural and comfortable.

If things have changed for young white women who happen to meet young black guys that's could be a sign that attitudes are evolving, and maybe young white women and young black guys have gotten to a place of being comfortable with such a situation earlier than some other people.

Not every mixed couple looks at the others color. Some do, but they don't last. People fall in love with the heart and soul and thats are what lcounts.
