See if the body language of the people in line already are showing signs of aggravation. Rolling their eyes, sighing or tapping their feet, that kind of stuff.

Look at the load of the grocery cart and try to observe how fast the checker is going. If she isn't finished with 10 pieces in less than 5 minutes - she's slow. Also, look at the body language of the customer. If the customer is giving the checker bad glares or dagger looks - look for another line, a shorter one.

Look at the customers standing in line...do they look frustrated? No matter which line I get in, inevitably, they have to do a price check. So, for me, it never matters whether the checker is slow.

Doesn't matter how slow or fast, you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll have a price query just before your turn or the check out person has a change over or they open up another till next to you just after you have unloaded your provisions onto the belt.

You can't! If you have a few things go to the express line. But then again they can be slow too! Try shopping late at night. I do that often and it is a lot quicker!
