I have a 2005 toyota corolla xrs manual trans. with 71,000 miles on it. Latley it has lost alot of its power. How it started is I would hit the gas and the car would go but the rpm's go up and the engine revs for a second, then it goes back to normal and I can accelerate normally. Today I had to run out and Its acting up alot more. I will accelerate and the rpm's go up really fast. I have to shift alot sooner than I use to just to keep the engine from reving too much and the rpm's from going too high. I can accelerate still but its like it has no power. It struggles to get going.
What could possible be wrong? Im gonna have it looked at tomorrow.

It sounds like your clutch is slipping. It could be a problem with the slave cylinder on the clutch, or the clutch itself could be worn and need replacement! Have it checked before it leaves you walking!!!

This sounds like a bad clutch. Your clutch is slipping and letting the engine spin faster than the transmission input shaft. Had the same thing happen on an old K-car; you could floor it and the RPM would come up but the speed wouldn't. Can you smell any clutch smoke?

Bring it into the shop let them diagnos it and give you an estimate, if you don't think its reasonable pay the diagnostic and do it yourself, sound like may be more than tune up, with these new engines a tune up is really only a plug change, everything is electronic. I am of course assuming you have changed all appropriate filters, gas, air pvc, oil, fuel that's a lot of miles

Ah oh....that's a sure sign of a bad clutch...it's slipping that's why your RPM's go up when you accelerate...don't wait too long to get it fixed or it wont go at all....(PS it's about time to have the timeing belt changed too)

It sounds like your clutch is slipping. You will probably have to have the clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing replaced.
