There's the school option, which, having done that for this very thing, isn't quite so valuable as field work in my opinion.

See if there's anything like this going on in the area and volunteer yourself as a PA. The more you work, the more you'll learn. Get hold a few different cameras (I'd suggest a handheld digital and a Bolex, which is a very inexpensive and very easy to use film camera; it's not hard to pick up a nice used one for around $30) and learn about editing--yes, editing is the most important thing for a director to know, and you'll need to know it. Get some editing software--Adobe Premiere is inexpensive and you can put in on the computer you're using now (as opposed to more expensive porfessional systems, which will need a dedicated computer). Play around with it. Get a regular camera and take pictures to learn composition. Write your script, get opinions, rewrite and polish.

And most importantly, save your money.

Really, all you need is the desire and money to make a movie - and then you need to hire the right people. Since you have no experience being a director, I would suggest becoming a producer - someone with the vision, the power to hire those with the skills to make your great movie, and the person who makes sure he secures the financial backing you will so desperately need to make a good film.

First - if all you want to do is bite off a current hit, then don't even bother you hack.

Second - you don't need any training. Sometimes reinventing the wheel leads to inovation, cost savings, and entertainment. Going to school is only going to teach you the traditional inside the box method of movie making.

These days, you can study it in school or just do it. Learn as you go. Keep trying. Most people who manage to do amazing things say in retrospect that they just didn't know that they were not supposed to be able to do it, whatever it was.
