Either read the directions on the can, or call the store where you purchased the paint. If you have a very humid day, then the drying time will increase. I would say as a rule of thumb, when it feels dry in several test areas, wait another hour and paint away. Generally the longer the drying time, the more likely you will have problems with bugs, dirt, etc sticking to it.
Want to paint mine next???

My husband owns his own painting buisness. I hear about his work all the time. You want to wait 24 hours for you primer to dry! It needs to set into the wood. Make sure that there was no rain or dew in the am that could have made it wet. Thats very good you are priming before painting. Im sure the house will look great. Good luck!

That depends on where you live and what the humidity is like. More humidity = longer drying times.
Typically - to be on the safe side - one should wait 24 hours for the primer to dry before applying the paint. A paint job looks *awful* if the primer is not left to dry properly. Just because it feels dry doesn't mean it is ready...the primer needs to "set" into the surface.

I have used water-based primers that can be painted over within a hour. If all else fails read back of can for answer. Ask the store who sold you the paint. You should be able to get a clear answer.

the outside primer should dry for at least a day,so after the primer coating wait for a day and then apply the paint coat.thats what our painters did when we painted our house.

what you husband should do is sample area first. just to see how long it take primer to dry, set a timer. but the answer is 1 or 2 minutes. tell your husband to try another type paint besides waterbased. Need all weather paint. That means the color last all year round until you ready change the color.

Several hours is enough in most cases. when painting aviod painting when the humidity is high. Too much humidity delays the drying process of the paint and may have long term negative consequences on the integrity of the coating. So to sum up only paint on clear dry days. And stop at about 3pm to allow the coating to dry before the condensation can mingle with the wet paint.
