I don't like to ask a boring question, but I get bruises a lot on my arms and legs, and some of them are unexplained, like I didn't bump the bruised area, etc. (PS- and I don't drink, so blaming it on black outs or forgetting is not an answer.)

You may have low platelets. Platelets are one of the components in our blood that makes it coagulate and form scabs. It is also possible that your capillaries are fragile. This can result from vitamin C deficiency. It may be a good idea for you to visit your health care provider who may wish to order a CBC (complete blood count) to see just what your platelet count is and a Chem 7 (a basic blood chemistry). Your provider will advise you based on the physical exam and lab results.

And your question was not at all boring. Incidentally, blood loss for any reason, potassium deficiency and low blood count (whatever that is) don't cause easy bruising.

Although it may sound crazy, the most common cause of unexplained bruising, especially when it is limited to one area is injury. These "injuries" can be subtle and therefore unremembered; this is much more prevalent in women than in men. Perhaps there is an area in your home or workplace where you typically pass through that may be narrow with something jutting out or you may be cutting a corner too closely. If you work at a desk, you may inadvertently be grazing your knee each time you move your chair away from it. Another problem that would lead to bruising is a drop in Platelets which could be determined by a simple blood test; this and other medical problems usually would not limit the signs to your right lower extremity unless there has been an insult to the area.

Have you noticed that your gums bleed too? Unexplained bruising with bleeding gums can indicate a bleeding disorder.

Do you exercise a lot? Bruises can occur in some people who exercise rigorously, such as athletes and weight lifters. These bruises result from microscopic tears in blood vessels under the skin.

If they keep showing up for no reason, see a doctor just to be safe.

Maybe you just bruise really easy and a slight bump that you don't even notice will leave a bruise.

my mother in law gets the same deal...she works in a doc's office and they say it's from low blood count...low potassium. You may want to go get some blood tests done.

It could be due to your diet...if you're not getting enough iron, potassium, etc.

If you eat relatively normal, go visit your doctor for a real answer.

You know, spirits are real. Spirits can hurt you physically as well as emotionally. It could also be that you just bruise easily. In any case, check with your doctor.
