Hey 'the wise one', Some people may think that it was destined to happen but it was an accident and accidents are not planned in advance!
Well, Steven Irwin was a crocodile expert alright, but not a marine man. He should have known the characteristics of the sea creature Stingray he was about to be in the midst of and taken all precautions. Those sea creatures are not basically aggressive but when they are frightened, they make use of their trump card! So, the powerful poisonous barb played its role as he was right above and very close to it and there came the end of the renowned crocodile man! Tragic indeed but it is a pity he didn't find his end between the teeth of a crocodile! It is said that an elephant trainer somehow finds his end at the hands of the elephant he had taken pains to train!
The thought as to whether it was waiting to happen is a myth and a debatable point. When you look at it, everyone's end is waiting to happen one day, doesn't it, 'the wise one'?

Yeah, I'm sad and shocked. I mean like you said there will never be another Steve Irwin. My friends and I would always joke that one day a crocodile was going to eat him but when it really happens its not a joke. If it wasn't for him I personally know several people who would not be addicted to Animal Planet the way they are now. Rest In Peace Steve. And my thoughts go out to his family.

Sorry to say I think he was an accident waiting to happen. He had many close calls. I'm sure he knew he was putting his life in danger many times. You just hate to lose someone who had such a passion for good things and to make a difference in this world. Today is my birthday and I"m more bummed out about his death than turning 41.

He died of bad luck. The accident as I read the account indicated he was not aware of the stingray buried in the sand. Granted he has a dangerous profession and could have died many times over but this is just dumb luck. I scuba dive and the same thing could have happened to me.

VERY ironic isn't it?

When he held his baby while feeding the alligator a dead chicken ... if the croc took the kid instead of the chicken would have been "bad luck." - Guess if Michael Jackson can get attention by holding his baby over a railing, everyone will try something like that to get ratings.

Call it bad luck if you want, but the fact remains that he consistently put himself in high risk situations. I truly believe he recognized those risks, and chose to pursue his passion for nature and zoology. I'd say it was more simply a consequence of his work, rather than being caused by some sort of bad timing.

The old saying "live by the sword die by the sword" he did take great risks and I believe he was aware of them. He died doing what he loved best its unfortunate and too bad because I believe his family should have slowed him down a bit and now today those kids are without a dad and that is what sadden's me the most. My thoughts are with the children and wife she will have to raise them without a father.

I think his death was really tragic.. He seemed like a very cool kinda guy. I personally think it just wasn't his lucky day, I mean he worked with wild animals for so long and then one day his luck changes... That day was, unfortunately, today...

No it was not bad "luck". It was bad preparation. If he had worn a light kevlar vest, he would still be alive today.

As years went by, he became more challenging and defiant and prepared less. This tragedy could've easily been avoided.

I would NEVER go underwater without proper "bulletproof" protection.

That being said, I'm terribly saddened by his lost. He was my favorite explorer. I'm especially saddened for his daughter who lost her father.

althoguh i do feel sorry for him, his wife, child and family his job had alot of risks in it. you don't see an everday person see an alligator and say, lets get a closer look. he was very brave and a great guy. although some people found him annoying i think that he was a good guy and was trying to teach us to be careful with gators, crocs, lizards etc. many will miss him. rest in peace
