I think to many girls, the situations frequently seem so dramatically unrealistic that they cannot buy into the fantasy and therefore it comes across as childish and cheesy.

Hmmm...never thought of that. Perhaps it's because sci-fi is so technical and many girls perfer things that are more emotional. On the other hand you can't really generalize people too much. There are guys and girls who like it and guys and girls who hate it.

As for me I don't really have a problem with it, but it doesn't usually keep my attention very long. But that can be said about most fictional movies, tv shows and stories (especially these days). Non fiction however gets my attention, but again that varies too.

I don't like or understand Star Trek, but here are many other sci-fi movies and books that I do enjoy. Science fiction is such a broad category that I couldn't either like or hate ALL of it!

i think most girls dislike science fiction for the same reason (well...roughly the same reason) as most guys dislike chick lit.

and there will always be girls who like science fiction, and there will always be guys who like chick lit (but...they'd be considered gay in today's society).

It may have something to do with this:

"So long, and thanks for all the fish."

Maybe it insulted them? I don't know? I like Science Fiction, I just hate reading it...
