How does the rest of the world perceive us as a nation, as a people?

Like, what are all the stereotypes people have against us?

I'm starting to realize people from other countries don't like us, but I just wanted to know the specific reasons why. Thank you in advance :)

well I'm an Egyptian Muslim.
Here in Egypt we have a great portion of the population below poverty line so when they see on tv what happened in Iraq
after US troops invaded it ,from torture to the insecurity that almost everybody is exposed to there don't expect him to think that:
Oh this is the result of decisions made by the US president and secretary of state and CIA,the people of the US have other opinions.
When it comes to me in person I believe that u r millions of people that have different opinions, some of u don't agree with what is happening ,others don't know what's happening to arabs and muslims.
Also ,your media channels (ABC,CBS) are having some problems.
I watch their news thru an arabian network (MBC).
For example their news talk mostly about the US army troops killed, but do they give a real picture of the everyday life of an Iraqi? I don't think they r excellent at that.
But not all times, for example ABC nightline as I can recall gave a real picture of southern Lebanon after the Israeli attacks(that ur president declared he's agreeing to it)
So with people who lost houses, sons, daughters, fathers, lives u can't expect them to think of the US people as decent people.
When Iraq,Lebanon are devastated by co-operation of US troops, there must be US people who tell the arabs that not every american is a killer or agreeing to these wars and that some of them are obliged to respond to call of duty and that the problem is the government decisions.
For me,I'm not an anti-american.I'm anti-colonist.

Well The World Really Isn't Worry About American so much
They Worry About American Politic More

But The Government In America Them Way Of Dealing With The Other Makes Alot Of People do not Agree With American Politics

and beside that The Media Make it shows Like All American supported The Government in Whatever They Doing
Which is not True because American Are Not Only 1000 You Seen On TV
Anyway That what The Media Does

But In General If You Idiot and You Are Proud You Are People do not like you

If You Trying Show That You Are Right And You are wrong because You Got Power,,,Ppl dislike you

If You Agree Over Killing Innocent,,,because You Got Power,,ppl dislike you

but On The Other Hand
American Are Human, They do not know alot about The Rest of The World because that is how the Media Showing,,,But Some They Really Start To Know
i do not blame Them,,,, i blame the system they are In

Peace and i hope my words make sense

Well majority think they are better than everyone else and that their country is the best place in the world. No matter how much effort you put into doing something, the American way seems to be always better. I am from Aruba, and a clear example is the natalee holloway case. I admit we are not qualified, since we have never ever seen such a case, to do forensics etc etc. Now this girl's mother demands that we bring in the FBI, hello the FBI doesnt have any jurisdiction none whatsoever in our country. What goes to show here is that the mother clearly doesn't respect our laws. Everyone on the island at one point was heart-felt for this woman, until she went to the media and started talking bad about our country! We helped her out every way we could, we are aslo perplexed that up the day of today that her daughter is nowhere to be found. But just cuz you didn't have the authority to handle the situation or get your way, doesn't mean she had to go badmouth us. And Americans are like that, when they don't get their way, they are ready to badmouth anyone or anything. If you all decided to be more humble and down to earth people might like you all a bit better. I am not saying everyone is,but that's what it's mostly like. I mean come on, look at how easy it is to sue someone. Food for thought!

I'm Canadian and deal with a lot of Americans in my job. The general consensus seems to be that Americans feel they own the world. They don't seem to understand that Canada is a different country, and just because they are American, they "deserve" to come here. A lot has to do with ignorance (as in lack of knowledge). It seems that America as a whole knows nothing about other countries. I've seen US citizens come to Canada in the middle of July w/ skis thinking that there is snow here all the time. It just makes them look stupid. Now saying that, not all Americans are bad, but the few that are, ruin it for the rest of you.

ok.
most people have a negative perception of America, and it got much worse since the unilateral measures in the whole world.

About Americans, most people don't care. The ones i know they are intelligent, and know how to distinguish high level politics from people themselves.
but, there is this feeling in general that Americans have no idea of what happens outside their territory (nor in terms of history and culture)
and can be rather selfish and materialistic in their comments about outsiders and their fate.

of course, America is very heterogenic, same as europe and Asia, and NY and California rock^-^

American people are similare to any people in the world...they have good,bad,...etc...people outside Usa dont like it because of its policy....some have other reasons...because they judge....there are also some tv shows that shows american in a wrong ( media in general)...alot of time they draw them as racis people....as i meet american people in my country i find them open-minded to new thoughts and diffrent cultures...and they are really kind, simple, funny people of course they have problems but who doesnt?.....
I think i hate american politecs because its controlled (not by people) its not close to democracy....i think americans dont know what their goverment is doing to other people.....and they need explaining ........alot hate that the most powerful country in the world is ruling it the wrong way...but im aware that there is a difference between american politecs and american people.....people are just simple ...but politecs is complicated never mind that Usa gives alot of american money to help isreal which spreads killing everywhere and Iraq war and other injustice things done in the world...........:)

The things I've heard about the USA:

- American arrogance & nationalism
- Crappy leader (this I most certainly agree with)
- Crazy amounts of racial tension
- Hatred of interracial love
- The South are still stuck in a timewarp, held in the 1920's
- Poor political parties
- "Americans are fat/lazy/dumb/don't understand sarcasm" - those dumb sort of stereotypes
- Patronising of other nations (feel superior)
- Terrible education & welfare problems
- Can't solve their own problems yet try to interfere in everyone else's (eg Hurricane Katrina)

And that's about it.

(from UK) i spent several weeks in NYC and really enjoyed america and the people i met. i do have to say all countries have their issues when it comes to politics and america seems to get bad press over here for theirs. i suppose when you got such a big fantastic country americans dont really need to go anywhere else as their is such variety within their own boundries. as the world is made smaller by travel, internet etc im sure we will get to meet more of you and changes opinions given to us by local media. i think your alright!!!!
