I work in an office and they have decided the office needs to be open on holidays. Currently they are getting volunteers to work the holidays but if that fails they will schedule them. I feel enough is enough and holidays should be just that. Business has too much control over us. When events like 911 happen we are in the dark with no radio or tv to keep us alert. I think it is sad that we are letting big business control everything and our families have to suffer. What are your thoughts?

We get time and a half pay also but some things are more important than money.

I understand the customer is the reason we have our jobs. I am a customer also. I don't expect people to have to work on holidays. If they chose to work that is fine. When peope volunteer to do this though it eventually becomes mandatory and that is where I have concerns. My business doesn't make money they protect their own money and investments. People don't want phone calls on the holidays. I know I don't.

I worked on a job that had me constantly working all the time. I was totally in the dark on events that was going on in the world.

I can understand the need for some people to work like that when they are supporting their family, but in my case, it wasn't the case.

So, I had no life at all; because, I worked the late night shift, weekends, and every holiday. And, the worst thing, the job really didn't appreciate the employees who devoted their lives to the company.

If you have a family, your family might understand the self sacrificed you gave to the welfare of your home, but leaving it up to business, it doesn't cut it in my book. They gain. You lose, and the pay usually sucks.

And, I am not speaking of doctors, nurses, firefighters, and police officers who usually get some appreciation of their laborious work.

Update: It should be about you as a faithful employee who serves their customers, but I find this not to be the case. Still who really appreciates a Wal-Mart employee on a holiday? All people do is fuss at the worker as being rude. So, I don't even like to go the places like Wal-Mart and many other businesses on holidays. They (the businsess) still wins; if the business is opened or closed, the business doesn't lose. People are still going to come and shop at stores, but for those employees who CHOOSE to work instead of being FORCED to work is better. A win/win in my book.

So, the bottom line is. It is ridiculous how so many workers are being treated now. Peace.

As long as they're still closed Christmas and Thanksgiving, don't complain. The poor folks who wait on you in restaurants don't get the other holidays off, and the folks at Wal-Mart only get Christmas!

I think the biggest issue would be lower productivity. You would not have the enthu to come in on monday morning after a good weekend and want to work with a fresh mind. I tihnk its going to be very counter productive!
