I agree with spunk, don't bother to paint it, especially if it is an older guitar that will be collectable in the future. If you really have to paint it, I would take it apart, sand down to the wood, prime it, then take it to an auto body shop and have them spray it. Most of them are professional painters and do a good job. Or you can take it to a guitar repair shop for advice.

well start by removing everything from the body. It's gonna have to be scuffed up but take it to a body shop and see if they can paint one for you.I am sure they can. Also if you go to a paint store and select a color, ask the sales guy about it and ask does he know of anyone who does side work. I am sure he or someone at that place paints. So roll by a store and check it out

If you want it to look "professional" you need to strip the finish, probably down to the wood, but at least to the undercoat.

But why bother? Spend that time practicing instead. Practicing improves your playing much faster than changing the paint job on your guitar!

I wouldn't do it. You could damage the guitar body inadvertently and ruin the sound of an instrument. If you really want it done, find a luthier (they make stuff like that).

sand it down with 250grit sandpaper, spray paint, wet sand with 800 grit sand paper, spray paint, wet sand with 1000 grit sand paper, clear coat, wet sand with 1000 grit paper, clear coat, wetsand with 1500 grit paper, clear coat, wet sand with 2000 grit paper... etc etc you get the idea

just an example.. you can apply more of the color coat, less of the clear coat.. whatever
