Well, before my son started school we picked his outfits out. Now, he has to choose and we compromise. I think the two best costumes were when he was 4 and 3. When he was 4 he was Zorro...he wore black velvet leggings, a white dress shirt and a black felt hat with a wide brim. I can not even begin to tell you the compliments we got...he was so cute! When he was 3 he wore a pair of pajamas, a mask, a cape and carried a flashlight. No one knew who he was but everyone asked...he was Pajama Sam.
We have only purchased two ready made costumes in the 10 years he has gone trick or treating and they were the least favorite of mine.
I think the most unique costumes are the ones you put together or make from scratch. When he dressed up as Harry Houdini last year all the teachers were so impressed that he was asked to visit all the class rooms. He wore a black velvet cape (that I made from 2 yards of black velvet and Velcro), black knit pants (Wal-Mart) and a white gauze shirt (found in his dad's closet).
My sister dressed her son and daughter up as Raggedy Ann and Andy one year and they won first prize at the carnival.
When my son was 1 and 2 he was dressed up as a spotted leopard. We got the leggings and top from the Gap and I made little ears out of a head band. I used a brown lipstick to decorate his face.
He wants to be something really scary this year. I said "What's scarier than a vampire?". We want him to be a lion tamer and take his cat with him (on a leash, as the cat is leash trained). We'll see...now you have us thinking about it...

How about a tea bag? Put some dead leaves in the bottom of two white plastic trash bags. Staple the bags to each other at the top, leaving room for a child's head to go through. The bags should sit on his shoulders. Add a string, and a cardboard "tag" that says Lipton. Or, with a sturdy cardboard box, a child can be a present, or one of a pair of dice. Cover the box with white paper for a die, and glue black construction paper "dots" on each side, or use birthday or holiday wrap and ribbon. Cut out a hole for the head, and one on each side for the arms. These are great costumes because your children can wear warm coats if it's cold on Halloween.

Homemade costumes are now so rare that they are unique...
Here are some that would be fun:
A character from a tamagotchi (mametchi is the cutest)
Crocodile
Unicorn
Starfish
Little Red riding hood
An M&M character
two of the characters from Bob the Builder?

well my friend was a waitress last year! She was like one of the one's on skates and like at sonic where they come out and serve you your food at your car! She looked REALLY cute! That's for a girl! One that i didn't see much of last year, was prison escapees! There were a few with the orange outfits and then a couple with the black and white stripes! One year my brother was Zoro! A pirate might be very popular this year too because of the Pirates of the Caribean 2! Hope it helped!

I found lots of really fun ideas on the web.
At this site, I thought "King of the (Asphalt) Jungle" (King Kong perched on a building and holding a Barbie and the Lego costumes were really cute:

Halloween is an evil holiday started by xtians to mock the Wiccans. Your question to me is like asking Jews how to celebrate Hitler's birthday!
