It seems like a cop out to me. It's also odd that gender studies and gay studies people use it because it seems to me that the term implies that there is something wrong with homosexuality but it is okay to be romantic with women and then have sex with men. I dun't get it!

You don't get it because you don't know what sexual preference means, you don't know what homosexuality means, and you're under the delusion that behavior dictates preference, when that isn't the case at all.

Sexual orientation is not a choice, people are born with it. You are either attracted to the same sex or the opposite sex. Your orientation is NOT decided by your sexual behavior, it is determined by which gender you are attracted to over the other. A homosexual is someone who is PREFERS the same sex, but that doesn't mean that homosexual cannot and do not have sex with the opposite sex, because they do. Similarly, straight men have and often do have sexual encounters with the same sex, but that doesn't make them gay.

No, actually it is used more in the "medical" area, the term is used to represent men who have had sex with another man without making any allusions toward any term that might be viewed by some to have negative connotations. BTW, even though it would be an illegally forced occurance, male on male rape victims would also fall under the heading(regardless of the fact that the sexual contact was against their will) of MSM.

Usually that term is used when considering things such as disease vectors.

The term "men who have sex with men" is often used in identifying those at high risk for HIV infection, among other reasons. The health professionals who use the term are attempting to be totally clear, that it's not just those who label themselves as "gay" or "bisexual" but also those who have same-sex liason's "on the down-low" or anybody who for whatever reason thinks that he doesn't fit one of the aforementioned labels, but is indeed having sex with men.

For that matter, the homosexual who abstains from sex, is excluded from the group of "men who have sex with men."

You make a very valid point. Men who are gay fall deeply in love, perhaps more deeply than many straight men. I think the journals avoid the word "Gay" as a term for it is more slang than descriptive. But you are right...."men you have sex with men" really states nothing about their orientation, does it? Most men will have some form of sex with other men if the conditions are right, and there are many 'right' conditions. But in general, men you have sex ONLY with men in their lifetime are gay, period. There is no middle ground here, Gay is the word. Our society has places stupid ramifications on this orientation without reason or sanity. All of them fall back on our Bible or puritanical foundings as a country...too bad, so many people are damaged by this ridiculous belief that it sickens me. We have more teen suicides here than all other countries (except Japan, where over achievement is expected, but cannot always be fulfilled) over this issue. Gee, when are parents going to learn that kids are what they are .... gay or straight, it really doesn't matter. We are all on a road to somewhere at any one time. Good luck, and thanks for a thought provoking question .... nice change here.

To be homosexual involves an attraction to the soul, mind and body of someone of the same gender.
"men who have sex with men" does not state anything about emotional or psychological attraction. The physical act of sex can be between 2 or more humans and not involve any emotional or psychological attraction. There is nothing beyond the physical act therefore "men that have sex with men" does not only refer to men that identify as homosexual it also refers to men that Identify as bisexual or heterosexual who have or have had sex with one or more men.

There is a difference between a person who identifies as a homosexual and men who have sex with men. For example, many men who are married have sex and sexual experiences with other men, but do not identify as gay or queer. Perhaps the people writing gender studies papers, are merely distinguishing between men who have sex with other men, whatever their own sexual orientation, may be, and people who identify openly as homosexual or bisexual.

Well, Some people just don't like labels. They consider them self people, who can fall in love with a great person that happens to be a guy or a girl. It's not always about sex.

I would say quite frankly that there are cases of MSM's who regularly have sex with men and they are straight as an arrow. I don't even think I would label them as bisexuals. Any willing participant is just a sex object to them. The person is a sex object to them because he is willing, not because the MSM is truly sexually attracted to him. When you ever meet up with one of these fellows, you will know it sooner or later.

A bisexual male is not equivalent to an MSM, even though the affectional aspect of all of this is oftentimes absent in the bisexual male too.

I got you. It took me a minute to read and understand it but I get what your asking. Yeah as if You only have sex with men then its a problem. Meanwhile if your attracted to men and fantasize all day long then your not a homo. Its so stupid. If your attracted t men your gay whether or not you acted upon it.

The term "men on men" sex usually refers to situations where normally heterosexual men have sex with men to relieve their sexual tensions. Its for situations like prisons, ocean shipping, and men on remote locations.

These men may have sex with men until they can get back into society and then return to being completely heterosexual.

I've never heard it referred to the gay community.
