This question was brought up at a gathering of folks aged 30's to 60's. The younger people were amazed and wanted to know why. None of us really know to this day.

The fact is that the few schools that did have indoor pools, as well as the YMCA and places like that, had to filter the water in the pool. The swimsuits people would wear at the beach back then were made of wool or cotton. These shed fibers that would quickly clog the filters and drains, so they ruled that you couldn't wear suits in the pool (and had to shower beforehand).

Nylon didn't come into common usage until way after WWII. Once the modern nylon and other artifical fabrics were in common usage to make suits out of, the rule against suits is no longer needed. However, you will still find many pools that have rules against wearing a T-shirt into the pool. Again, this is for the same reason, the fibers from the shirt clog the filters up.

my dad used to tell me about this its because they used to swim in the rivers as they had no swimmimg pools as we do now,and there would be a risk of getting trunks caught as some of these rivers had long reeds in them ,so the only way to no you couldnt get caught up and possibly drownd was to swim nude,i hope this has answered ur question.
