If you buy a "Guitar Pod" from Line6 or a similar amp modeler, you don't need an amplifier. You play the guitar through headphones or through your stereo!
You might also want different effects like a chorus, a phaser, flanger, distortion, etc. depending on how you want to sound. It's easier to listen to each of these than to try and describe what they do to your sound.
But learn how to play a bit first before messing around with effects!

A stand for the guitar, and an Amp. Plus a cable to connect the guitar to the amp, as you know.
Marshall is a good brand for Amps.
There are diffrent types of amps, like cabinets and combo amps.
Combo amps have effects built in and that might be the best value cuz you wont need to get some Effects Pedal right away.
Um, a Marshall MG 100 DFX is not bad.
Ive heard the Line 6 brand of amps before, but when i heard Marshall amps, i just instantly knew i loved their sound over that brand. And Marshall has been around for years.
Another good quality brand ive heard of is MESA BOOGIE. But there very expensive and made totally in America, i heard.
Musiciansfriend.com has lots of stuff for the electric guitar.
I think Ernie Ball Slinky strings are good quality guitar strings by the way. I think they are made in america , come to think of it.
So ya, that might give you some idea of what to get.
OH YA....and a guitar strap!....you can get different styles, but you can get a basic one thats affordable. But you can get kinds with designs on it and stuff.
Also, guitar picks you prolly thought of allready. I heard DUNLOP brand picks are good. But its not as serious as it may all sound.
Just get what you can get, and remember you get what you pay for unless you got a good connection that can hook you up.

Might wanna get some guitar picks, a guitar tuner, cords, a chord book, possibly a strap if you want to play standing up. A stand to have somewhere to put your guitar and an extra pack of strings for the future and your set to rock and roll.
Check out guitar center for your stuff.

A connecting cable from the guitar to your amplifier, flat picks or thumb picks, and perhaps a foot pedal that will give you distorted sounds to your persuasion.
Avoid capos; they are detrimental to advanced playing. You need the entire fretboard while playing lead guitar--not just chords.
A good tuner is always necessary and approved manufacturer's polish to keep the instrument looking good. Keep your guitar clean; it will reward you.
