Gas and oil are found lots of places, from Texas to the Middle East to the coast of Africa. You can find a map of U.S. oil and gas fields here:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/rpd/topfields.pdf

And if I was doing the report, I'd read this document, because it covers the basics as well as listing oil and gas reserves by region.

http://www.apachecorp.com/content/released/Basics_Oil_EIA.pdf

And this one has a table listing the top ten oil and gas producing regions:

Natural gas and oil are found in the different formations in the earth. Formations are like layers of an onion, starting with the surface layer and changing as you get deeper into the earth. Here in Michigan, the natural gas is found in the Antrim formation. I have worked on a drilling rig for ten years and have seen many different types of formations. Good luck with your report. You may wish to look into the Oil and Gas Drillers association and their magazine which is published monthly.
