A cat would be the safest bet given that choice but consider getting two cats (both spayed female) so they have each other to keep company in your absence. Other than that....a fish might be the best choice since they have about a 10 second memory and their world is constantly renewing itself. Dogs are too emotionally dependent on humans and would suffer if left too long (not to mention the possible development of behavioral problems). Good luck!

I think a cat or dog would be great. A cat is easier to look after, because you can leave it at home while you are at work or if you have to go away for a few days. Just make sure that it has enough food and water. Cats are great company. I know this because I had a cat up until Thursday. I had to put her down. She was the best cat I had ever had even though I only had her since May 2006.She was my friends cat.She was 11 years old. I think that it is best to possibly get one that is independent. My other cats were but they weren't as nice. The last one was because it belonged to my friends and they had her since she was a kitten. They taught her to be a good cat. I hope that this will help.

If you're going to get a pet, I would suggest having two cats, as they will have each other for company during the day, and will be happy to see you when you get home for some playtime (a laser pointer really works well, or simple shoelaces). Don't feel bad, either; cats nap most of the day :) Just know that they are an investment, what with shots, food, litter, and time. But they reward you with purrs and warmth when you're down or a little under the weather! Good luck.

Cats are very good, they're independent and loyal but be careful about the breed - some cats like Burmese and Siamese are hooligans and prefer human company for most of the day!! Alternatively get a nocturnal animal like a hamster which will sleep through the day and be awake when you're home. They're also fine if left on their own for a night or two, as long as they have plenty of food and water.

If you're out at work all day it wouldn't really be fair to have a dog , but a cat would be ok as they do their own thing anyway - just make sure you have a way that the cat can get in and out. You could also consider hamsters, gerbils etc, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds or fish

I have the same dilemma as you do. I live in a small flat without a garden and go out for at least 8 hours a day, 4 days a week.
To own a pet which needs companionship and/or exercise would be totally unfair - such as a dog for example. A cat can be let out quite happily and fend for itself for a while but there are obviously alternatives -
Amongst others and to name but a few; budgie, goldfish, hamster, guineau pig or rabbit.
If in doubt, speak to your local pet shop and they will advise you.
Common sense really, isn't it?

An older cat, maybe one that really needs a home from a rescue centre would be ok to be left during the day, so long as they have a clean litter tray and fresh water. If its an older cat then you know that its already litter trained and sociable. Indoor cats like this only want you to love them when you come in and a warm fire!

A pet will honestly tie you down to your home. They are sweet & loveable, but you're right, it's not fair to THEM if you're away all the time. If you ever like to pick up and take off on a trip on a whim, you'll always have to consider your pet's needs. Wait til you're at a point where you can and want to be home a lot to get a pet.

cats are more of a lone creature oppossed to dogs who are friendly interactive animals so I would recommend a cat in your instance.
Dogs get distressed and bored too easily when left alone all day whereas cats just sleep and mooch around the place quite happily - for extra measure though buy them a few toys to entertain themselves with and always be sure theres fresh water and food available.

when i lived on my own and working full time i got me a parakette. its like a parrot. but smaller. n cheaper. the bird cost bout £50 it took a while to train so it would sit on my hand and stuff but got there in the end. you can also teach it to talk but i had no luck with that just the odd whistle tune. i just left the radio on for him during the day. made a great pet and didnt need a full days attention,
