biking speed for thr to journey
=5/(25/60)mph=12mph
for the fro journey=5/(35/60)mph
=8.6mph
for the whole trip=total dist/total time
10/{(25+35)/60}=10mph

A simple ratio will work here...

For the outbound trip: If I travel 5 miles in 25 minutes, how far will I travel in 1 hour, 60 minutes?
5 miles / 25 min = x miles / 60 min
(5)(60)/(25) = x miles
12 = x

For the return trip: if I travel 5 miles in 35 minutes, how far will I travel in 1 hour, 60 minutes?
5 miles / 35 min = y miles / 60 min
(5)(60)/35 = y miles
8+4/7 = y
(eight and four sevenths)

Now for the entire trip, a simple total of miles traveled divided by the total time in tranit will do:
I traveled 5 miles in 25 minutes and I traveled 5 miles in 35 minutes. My total trip was 10 miles and it took exactly 1 hour, so my AVERAGE speed was 10 miles per hour for the period of time I was in transit. My average speed from start to finish would be lower since I accumulated some time between the outbound and return trip. For example, if I had lunch and it took an hour between the outbound and return trip, my average speed would be 10 miles in 2 hours and my average speed for the entire trip is only 5 miles per hour.

Rate = distance/time

so you rode 5 miles per 25 minutes or 5/25 you would then say your rode 1 mile per 5 minutes or the best answer is to convert your fraction to 60ths.

So 5/25 = 1/5
1/5(12/12) = 12/60
and since 60 minutes = 1 hour
you rode at 12 miles per hour.

You should be able to figure the 2nd half out by yourself.

To find the whole trip, add the total time taken and the total miles ridden, then apply the same procedure as above.

1st leg
5 miles in 25min
so speed = 60 / 25 x 5 = 12 m/h

2nd leg
5 miles in 35min
so speed = 60 / 35 x 5 = 8.6 m/h

Average speed of whole trip = 60 / (25 + 35) x 10 = 10 m/h

I hope your teacher wont see this or we r both in trouble. n its been dacades since i did this stuff so I could be wrong.
