His heart was pierced by a barb from a stingray. I am not 100% sure about the spelling on this, but I think his name was Steve Irwin, he was Australian. This was the guy that everyone tried to say put his infant in danger by taking it too close to a crockodile during the crock's feeding. Irwin claimed the child was never in any danger.

I feel sympathy for his wife and children, but everyone knows the possibilities when they go into another creature's home environment...so I am not surprised that he fell victim to the stingray, (the ray may have felt it was defending itself!) it would have been different if the stingray had come up on the beach to attack him. He was in the ray's home territory, and just like getting into the cage with a lion or tiger or bear (OH MY!) there is never a 100% certainty that you will be able to control the situation when in another creatures home environment.

My brother lost part of his foot in a shark attack, but if he had not been in the water with the sharks, then the chance of the shark coming up on the beach or going to my brother's home to eat part of his foot would have been very very slim.

I do feel sad for his family. He seemed to enjoy taking risks, so I do not imagine that he was able to be insured easily or for a reasonable price!

Check CNN or MSNBC, before I changed the channel I was hearing about the circumstances of his death about every 5 minutes!

HOLLYWOOD - Crocodile hunter Steve Irwin's death has been hailed "a huge loss to Australia" by the nation's Prime Minister, John Howard.
The 44-year-old daredevil was killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was diving off Australia's northeast coast to film an underwater documentary.

Irwin was famed for his death-defying stunts, which involved wrestling snakes and crocodiles. He also courted controversy in 2004 when he held his one-month old baby in one arm while feeding a chicken carcass to a snapping croc with the other.

Howard says, "I am quite shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin's sudden, untimely and freakish death.

"It's a huge loss to Australia.

"He was a wonderful character. He was a passionate environmentalist. He brought joy and entertainment and excitement to millions of people.

"He was a one-off character. He was the genuine article. What you saw was what you got.

"He took risks, he enjoyed life. He brought immense joy to millions of people, particularly to children, and it's just such a terrible loss."

Irwin is survived by wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue and Bob Clarence.

Shortly after 11:00am local time on 4 September 2006, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while diving in Queensland's Batt Reef, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef. The events were caught on camera and the footage is now in the possession of Queensland Police. Irwin was in the area filming his own documentary, to be called The Ocean's Deadliest, but weather had stalled filming. Irwin decided to take the opportunity to film some shallow water shots for a segment in the television program his daughter Bindi was hosting, when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

After reviewing the footage of the incident and speaking to the cameraman who recorded it, marine documentary filmmaker and fisherman Ben Cropp speculated that the stingray "felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead..." In such a case, the animal responds by automatically flexing the serrated barb on its tail, which is up to 30 centimeters (roughly 12 inches) in length, upward. In this case, the motion struck Irwin's chest and pierced his heart.Crewmembers aboard his boat called emergency services in the nearest city of Cairns and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later.

The Queensland Police Service notified his family and released a statement for the media concerning his death. News of his death prompted a public outpouring expressing shock and loss. Several Australian news websites went down because of high web traffic and talk-back radio experienced a high volume of callers expressing their grief, commemorating his passion and exuberance. Prime Minister John Howard, among many other politicians, expressed his "shock and distress" at the death, saying that "Australia has lost a wonderful and colourful son.” Irwin's body was flown to a morgue in Cairns, where stunned family and friends were gathering on Monday night. His wife Terri was informed of her husband's death while on a walking tour in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania, and returned to the Sunshine Coast with their two children.

His name is Steve Irwin and he got hit in the chest by a string ray whilst filming off the Queensland Coast. Although the ray is poisonous, it seems that he was punctured near or in the heart and died almost immediately.
