I still do to an extent, it's all about not caring what others think. Loosen up! Just go out and be yourself, the yourself that you know, not the shy reserved self that everyone else knows. Once you get out there and make a fool of yourself a few times you'll realise you wont actually die of embarrassment.

You'll also learn that not everyone will like you, and there is nothing you can do about that. Don't let others control you. If you're avoiding having a life because of insecurities you're letting others control you. I'm not a doctor or anything, these are just things I have learned from my own life experiences. I missed out on a lot of things because I was so worried about what other people would think. I hope I helped at least a little. Good Luck.

I don't think I get all that nervous or unconfident around people, but I do avoid social contact sometimes if I don't see a purpose to it. Just being around people without anything to really talk about or do bores the hell out of me. If I'm forced to remain in a boring situation, then I'll probably start to get a little depressed and frustrated.

I guess this comes from the fact that I'm comfortable in solitude and get no real payoff from just being around someone. I like to purposefully interact and intelligently converse with people. But if I can't do those things, I'm much happier by myself reading a book or playing a video game or something like that.

I am always nervous around people, i am not sure about how much i am able to help, but i can tell you that you are not alone, our cases of anxiety my vary but what helps me is to create time for yourself, talk to yourself and organize why your so nervous, i always try to find a place where people are not around, the best place for me is at the park, at night, on the swings with my cd player, it has gotten me through complicated time for the last 10 years, i am 18 now and i seem to be getting worse as i go through school, but i do know that if i didnt have music and swinging i would become even more of a loner than i already am.

I don't like to go out in public anymore----I hate it! I am seeing a psychiatrist now and I hope this gets better. Good luck! :) Angel

Most of my life I have bluffed my way through it.
Every once in a while it gets the better of me and I act like a complete moron.
The only good thing is as you get older it matters less to you. You are expected to be a little eccentric.
What worked for me was moving to another country and living as the soul "Whitey" in the neighbourhood.
As they had no point of reference they thought everyone was like me and they are so used to me by now , 30 odd years on, that I am like a touchstone for them.
It provides great cover for all my insecurities.!

sweetie, life is a contact sport. Try attending personality improvement classes and lift up your self esteem. Okay?

It's possible that you could have Asperger's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger%27s

See if the criteria fit you. If so, ignore the messages such as "take self-esteem classes." People often react negatively to problems like yours because they don't understand them and thus try to make you feel guilty as if it is your fault.
