Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

He was filming a documentary on the most dangerous animals in the ocean and he got sting by a sting ray. The camera men and the crocidile hunter guy didnt notice he got stung untill they saw blood in the water. Its soo sad! he was only 36years old.

He was filming a documentary of deadly sea creatures. He was swimming above a sting ray, the sting ray whipped it's tail up, and the barb went through the skin, underneath his rib cage and pierced his heart.

Damn fluke of nature a stingray whipped his tail at him and the bony end of the tail pierced his heart a complete 1 in a million chance poor fella

he was doing a show and swimming and a stingray stung him with a 10 inch barb into the Heart.

Sadly, he was killed in a freakish accident...by a giant stingray while filming a children's program on the Great Barrier Reef. He died instantly.

It was bound to happen; he was always putting himself in harm's way. My understanding is that he was swimming with some stingrays, and he got too close to one and it stung him in the chest, putting a hole in his heart.

A stingray stung him. They think it was a direct hit to the heart, or he'd have survived it.
