I love everything German, and I was seriously thinking about settling there in a few years. But a friend told me that maybe I shouldnt because they were very racist.. Is this true?! So I would receive threats for being East Indian?

I think the 'it's racist to think so' response is a bit unfair. Some countries do have worse racism than others.

I noticed when I visited Germany that there weren't a huge number of non-white people, perhaps on account of their lack of success in building an empire.

However there are many more anti-Nazi activists in Germany than there are neo-Nazis (of whom there are a similar number to Britain or France)

I am thinking about moving to Berlin some time. It's a beautiful and cheap city where they seem to live a really good lifestyle.

The Germans are just as racist as any other European nation, including us in Britain. Yes, their is a hard core who hate immigrants, but on the whole im sure you'll be welcomed with open arms, as long as you embrace the culture.

Besides, where else do Germans come from? France? :P

NB
toecutter, seriously, get a life. The Germans teach the wars *both of them, not just the last one* to their kids, every one of us European nations does. They accept their past and move on, as every othern ation in the world has already done. Why dont you join us in the 'its in the past' club?

i am an american living in germany now and i really don't believe that they are. ofcourse you will have your bad bunch but that will be anywhere you go, and is not specific to germany. many of them are ashamed of that part of their country's history and have overcome it. my german neighbors have been nothing but kind and helpful to me. my son attends the german kindergarten and is only one of 2 american children there and i have not noticed any ill will. i have been in germany for 3 1/2 years now. perhaps if you do decide to move here you should take into consideration what part of germany you move to. perhaps somewhere that is more culturally diversified than other areas....maybe even somewhere near a military base, as there are americans, germans, british, etc... that way you know the germans in those areas are accustomed to and more used to different cultures. most all of the bases in germany i'm sure have been long established in their respected communities and have a good relationship with the area. good luck.

Germans, racist ? I would not worry about it if you speak German at last you can know if you are threatened. Germans get hassled in England for being German and thats because we won the war!

My grandparents live in Germany (Munich) and I haven't seen any racism in the times I've been there. I think all places will have it to some degree, but regardless, you should never let someone else's ignorance stop you from doing what you want. Go. It's a beautiful place.

calling all germans racist is racist...but of course some are, just like any other country any other place...some people are bigoted, that's human nature.

Yes. Germans and Austrians, it is in their Character and are still very possessive and obsessive over their own Country.
I know, I lived there and still have family there.
