I found a turtle dead in my backyard. His legs were purple and his eyes white. It definitely died today.

Can you tell me the cause of it's dead?

Nothing really dies of old age, all things except those killed die of organ failure -- kidneys, lung, heart, vascular occulusions. In other word of suffocation -- lack of oxygen. When the heart stops pumping blood, for whatever reason, oxygen does not get to the tissues, and the animal, or person begins to die, one cell at a time...... It could have starved, been poisioned, an injury that you did not see. The legs were purple because blood no longer circulated in them. They eyes were white because with no circulating blook, they lost their vitality, and were beginning to rot, as was the entire critter as its circulation failed, for whatever reason.

The most common cause of turtles dying on dry land is traumatic injury- for example, being run over but not crushed. This happens more often than you might think.

The compression does lots of internal injuries and bleeding- resulting in the purpling of the limbs and the fluids in the eyes. It usually does damage to the spine, which is part of the back shell, and can do a wide variety of other injuries that would not be apparent from the outside.

Poisoning is actually unlikely- turtles are incredibly toxin-resistant. A lot of the foods they eat in the wild can be toxic to one degree or another- mushrooms, shellfish, various insects, etc. It is actually difficult to anesthetize a turtle because of this.

"Autopsy" means post-mortem examination of a human. To investigate your turtles cause of death you would perform a "necropsy".

But if you can't tell what caused his death just by looking, he may not be so fresh after you've finished vet school!

if your concerned about poison/disease lurking in your backyard or something like that i would call the humane society or something they will check it out or your local law enforcement might know who you should call to find out who check dead animals for poison or disease...other than that i dunno probably just natural causes things die everyday...maybe something got ahold of it...the purple is probably because of the lack of oxygen though have you ever heard of someones lips turning blue ??? same thing
