if by more you mean any increase at all, i suggest a performance air filter. it's the easiest and most bang you'll get for the buck. it's only gonna amount to a small increase in power and efficiency, but it's definitely measurable. next you could try an exhaust upgrade (muffle and tailpipe). also a measure bang, but a few more bucks. beyond those two you'll like be spending some cash that will fall under what you probably call a "major upgrade".

Define "major alterations."

A cold air intake is relatively easy to install and likely to get, well, enough power you might notice. Exhaust mods are a little more work, but you can put a header and exhaust on there without tearing into the engine or anything like that. Put those together and you may get 10-15 hp or so.

Every gasoline motor puts more gasoline into the engine than there is oxygen to burn it. It's so it will be rich enough for the spark plug to fire it.

Since you already have more gasoline entering the cylinder than is being burned, all you need to do to extract more power is to get more oxygen into the cylinder so that the extra gas will burn.

Install a nitrous oxide unit.

And use it sparingly, it can destroy your motor if you use it too heavily. But it sure is nice having that extra power when you want it there.

Well first you can cut the catalytic converter off of it and replace it with a straight pipe. Then incorporate an air cooler into your air flow system. Should increase the power a bit. Also put top of the line plugs and plug wires in it.
