Actually if the carpet got wet so did the padding underneath it.You can remove the carpet and dry it out but the wet padding needs to come out too.Once you remove this check the floor underneath for water everything has to be dried out then go from there. Most people replace the padding cause it holds the smell.

I think there are odor remover carpet parfumes in the stores. Try to buy one.
The main questions are the following:
- what is the material of the carpet
If it is made of some natural materials, it has got a special odor when it becomes wet. For example, wet wool carpets have the odor of a sheep, wet cotton carpets the odor of a factory. When these carpets became dry, their odor disappears usually. Synthetic carpets have not any special odor when wet.
- how long has the carpet been wet?
if it was dried immediately or in a short time, the possibility for rotting is minimal. but if you let it wet for a long time, it is possible it is rotten. Try to clean it once more with carpet cleaner foam or soap or machine. These solutions are the best for removing odor from carpets.

Wet Carpet Smell

This can be complicated! If it was just slightly wet then you can probably use an industrial strength cleaner to clean the carpet. Then you deodorized it. The smell is the result of bacteria and just deodorizing will not get it done. If it was soaked due to a water leak or flood, then you will have to remove the under padding and replace it. That is done after the carpet is cleaned with an industrial cleaner and thoroughly dried for about a week using non-stop blowers. The padding is then replaced and the carpet relaid. If it was on a basement floor that was cement, you will need to get that sprayed with an anti-bacterial spray and this can be done just prior to the blower/drying process. Only then will you be certain that you carpet is free of odor producing bacteria.

To remove odor from a carpet that got wet, first use vinegar in a steam cleaner. After the carpet is dry from the cleaning, use carpet deoderizer and let set for at least an hour. Then vacuum. Vacuum three or four times with the deoderizer. This should work. We had a large fish tank break and this worked for us.

I know for spot cleaning, vinegar is your best bet. It freshens the carpet, gets rid of the stain, and eliminates the odors. But if it is a widespread area...well...that's a lot of vinegar, but it may be an option. Or You could sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet and let it sit overnight and vacuum it up. Baking soda absorbs odors, but if the urine is still in the carpet, it won't work (and you have too keep all of the animals off the carpet because eating baking soda isn't good for them. Try the vinegar first. When it dries you can use the baking soda. A cut up onion in a bowl of water overnight will help odors too. I wish you luck!

I struggled with carpet smell of my own for months. Mine was from pet urine, as well as rain that leaked into the house for about 4 feet from the walls.
I have found that if you mix 1/2 spray bottle of Alcohol, and 1/2 bottle of white vinegar, then totally saturate the carpet if possible, the smell will disappear in a couple of days. You may have to repeat this process, depending on how strong the smell, but I promise, it works.
Before I discovered this, I spent somewhere near $150- on products that promised to remove the odor, and didn't. Then I noticed that the main ingredient in most of the products was alcohol, and or vinegar. I also asked my own yahoo question on how to rid the carpet of this odor problem, and most people mentioned white vinegar.
Good luck on this, you should be odor free soon.

As Tracy said you have to remove the padding underneath to get the odor out if it was the whole or major area. for small area try getting pet odor remover for carpet and put in a carpet cleaner. But when all is said and done you may end up wanting to do the whole carpet.

What did it get wet with? If it is something like flood water, you will never be able to get the smell out no matter what you do.
If it is something like urine,a urine remover for carpet does the job quite nicely( I have a cat who used to have accidents) I have my own carpet cleaner, and I just use the urine remover in it,and it works wonders.
If you just have a funky carpet, get it professionally cleaned.
If you like the way it turns out,ask them what you can do to maintain the results as long as you can.
The best hint I ever got was to get rid of smells in your carpet after it is cleaned and dry,is to shake ordinary baking soda onto your carpet, and kind of work it in with a clean broom, and let it sit for about a half an hour the just vacuum. If you don't like you house all scented up with all of those expensive, smelly powders that they have, baking soda works wonders. It does not harm your kids, animals, or your houseplants either.
Good luck.
