I need to purchase a device to check my computer network cables for correct instalaltion, good connection etc. I have checked online and there are hundreds at all kinds of price ranges. I was hoping not to spend more than US $50, though if it is absolutely the best thing to do, I can spend more. Can anyone recommend a good device?
Thanks

Let me add that I have only limited experience with electronics (though I am learning). Most of the devices I have seen have plugs for the cables to plug into, then you push a button, and the device gives a readout. Usually tells you if there are open circuits and often if the cable is wired as a patch cable or a crossover. Hadn't considered using my meter as a continuity.

Buy a cheap 15 dollar ohmmeter and ohm the conductors out!

If you're going to be doing this regularly, then spend the money, buy a good reliable one. In the long run, you will be glad you did... the less time you spend up in dirty roof spaces or under desks, screwing with cables, the better. A cable tester itself is quite simple... the important thing is its ability to survive being tossed around in your toolbox, dropped from ladders, rained on and immersed in coffee and soda at intervals. Or maybe you don't work like me :-)

Here's a couple of examples that you might look at.
