I didn't know that sting rays can kill people. They have sting rays at the petting section of the GA aquarium. So, wouldn't the sting rays be a danger to people? or only certain kinds of sting ray can kill?

not all (sting) rays can kill you. some (stingrays) have barbs on their tails which contains a poisonous substance. The ones you are being allowed to pet are not able to sting you.

Usually stingrays at a petting section of any aquarium would have their barbs removed. Stingrays are not an aggressive creature by nature. The venom of the stingray can cause excrutiating pain, but it is rarely fatal. The reason Steve Irwin was killed, because the venomous barb went right into his heart, puncturing it. If it hits the legs or foot, it will cause excrutiating pain and the wound can become infected if it not treated immediately, As said before stingrays do not attack people, unlike some sharks. Their venomous barbs are for defense only and usually they will swim away if they are approached by a diver. They will use it if they are stepped on and if there is no other alternative for it to escape. So their is no reason to fear them, just respect them. And avoid them.

The answer is in the title manta ray. Rays don't have a barb whereas stingrays do! Manta rays also feed on tiny creatures called plankton, so are filter feeders! So harmless! Although the giant mantas have the reminants of a barbs, its not exposed, its how you tell the difference between giants and reef mantas. Steve Irwin was unlucky and was stung through the heart by a heavily pregnant female Bull stingray! If he was stung anywhere else he would have lived, but the blood lost from the heart was what killed him!

This was a freak accident..
I have been stung / stabbed by sting rays 3 times..
It hurts and leaves a little stab wound but no bit deal.
Mine was twice in the leg and once in the butt...
I was wearing a wet suit but that isn't a great amount of protection.

they have a barb on their back that is filled with venom. it is rare that their stings are fatal. the ones you are allowed to pet have had the barbs taken off. aquariums will them let the rays live in seclusion and allow the barbs and venom to grow back before they are released into the wild. it was a rare occurance that happened to steve irwin. the barb hit him in the wrong place, piercing his heart. he will forever be missed : (

sting rays cannot kill people. they are int he same family with sharks (chondricthyes) and have sharp barbs at the base of their tail. if you step on them or make them irritated than they can whip their tail around and jab you. they do secrete a poison but its not deadly, it is painful and will probably make you sick. its best to go to the local hospital of to a lifeguard to see if you will be okay. what happened to steve was unfortunate. he was swimming over/to close to the sting ray and it ended up piercing his chest and poking him in the heart =(

it would have to be a pretty big sting ray to kill you. there is a barb on its tail that emits a venom. it would be worse if the venom got anywhere close to your heart.
