It is an old custom that women used to follow. You couldn't wear white shoes or carry a white pocketbook after labor day because that was the ushering in of the fall season.Then you had to wear brown-orange -beige-yellow. Years ago you could not wear stripes and checks together. Red heads were not supposed to wear red -orange or purple because it clashed with their hair color.Just to name a few of the fashion rules that was popular in the early 50s.

It used to be that the fashion gurus said this, but I think that only the older people follow that rule any more. Wear what you want even if it is after Labor Day.
