at noon, car A is going north at 30mph and is located 20 mi northof car B. car B is going west at 50mph. what is the distance between the cars at 12:45 pm?

would i need to use the pythagorem theorem and the distance formual to solve this? thanks for the help, i really appreciate it.

time=12.45-12.00=45 min=3/4 hr
distance travelled by car A in 45 min
=30*(3/4)=22.miles
distance travelled by car B in 45 min
=50*(3/4)=37.5 miles
distance between the two cars taking the initial distance and using the Pythagoras theorem
=[(22.5+20)^2+(37.5)^2]^1/2
=(1806.25+1406.25)^1/2
=(3212.50)^1/2
=56.7 miles approximately

Let the point where car B is located be the origin.
After 45 min
Dist of A from origin=20+30*45/60=20+22.5=42.5
Dist of B from origin=50*45/60=37.5
We simply square these and add and
take the root to get the Dist between cars
Dist bet A&B After45Min
=(42.5^2+37.5^2)^1/2
=3212.50^1/2=56.7 miles

There are numerous ways to solve this problem but with intution and the pythagorem theorem you can easily solve it.

Since the two cars are moving 90° away from each other, solve how far apart each car is from their respective axis.

Ie, at 12:45 car A is 20 miles + 30mph * 0.75 hrs = 42.5 miles away from where Car B started from. This can be your Y axis.

Car B's axis is 50 mph * 0.75hrs = 37.5 miles away from the origin (starting point).

Use pytha thereom c = sqrt ( b^2+ a^2) and you obtain = sqrt ( 42.5 miles ^ 2 + 37.5 miles ^2 ) = sqrt (3212.5 miles sq.) = 56.78 miles apart.

After 3/4 hr, car A will have traveled 22.5mi and car B will have traveled 37.5mi. If you think of the vectors as a triangle, side A will be 20+22.5=42.5 and side B will be 37.5. Using the Pythagorean Theorem, h=sqrt(a^2+b^2), h=sqrt(1806.25+1406.25) = 56.679mi.

Now go do the rest of your homework! :-)

Okay, let's say B is at 0,0 and A is at 0,20. In 45 minutes, A will be at 0,42.5 and B will be at -37.5,0. SQRT(42.5^2+-37.5^2)=56.6789202 miles apart.

enable the time taken to attain the trip spot = x hours So the time taken to return to the beginning factor = 7 - x hours consequently 40x = 30 (7-x) 40x = 210 - 30x 40x + 30x = 210 70x = 210 x = 210/70 = 3 So John took 3 hours time to attain the trip spot the area travelled = Time * velocity = 3 * 40 = one hundred twenty miles finished distance travelled = one hundred twenty + one hundred twenty = 240 miles
