why do they call them semi-trucks?

shouldnt the semi truck be like the car and the big 18 wheelers be the truck?

because they are 1/2 a truck until they pull a trailer. Like a dump truck has a dump box, a box truck has a box built on it.So semi because its not hooked up to anything yet ; so its semi

the real term is tractor trailer semi is slang for the tractor only half
