Elvis Presley was the first without question. John Lennon said it best when he said "before Elvis there was nothing". The birth of Rock & Roll can be debated. However, Elvis was and is a phenomena that is still known throughout the world today some 39 years after his death and without Elvis Rock & Roll may never have survived.

It depends on what you consider "rock". Its a matter of opinion. You could say Buddy Holly was the first rock star, or Elvis. Or you could say that Robert Plant was. Its alllll a matter of opinion.
