In much of the world the money comes from outside, US religionists pay for Churches, Saudi Arabia pays for mosques.
The poor fools who attend the churches and mosques pay the wages and upkeep of the preachers, though there is some money available for specific programmes they set up, some from religious bodies, some from secular organisations. Some of the priests and Imams are good at claiming money for all sorts of pretexts. My experience is that Saudi Arabia usually follows up to check on whether the programmes are carried out. The Christian donors do not appear to be so good at this. A good competent preacher can provide his people with some economic advantages. When people are poor they will accept this in order to survive.
I saw an American missionary preaching in a school, the kids sat in silence while he ranted on, every eye on the boxes of chicken dinners he had stacked up behind him.
The Hindus and the Muslims do similarly, it is traditional for them to give food after a religious event, though in the case of the Hindus it is veggie. And they don't usually have it on display, so it is not quite so blatant.

Mosques and churches usually start off in rented property or in someone's home. When there are enough members, they use various fund raising activities to buy or build their own premises.

Churches usually have a weekly collection - I don't know about mosques. The richer members usually also make regular contributions. This pays the expenses of running the church including the staff. Most Christian denominations have an arrangement where the richer churches subsidise the poorer ones.

The main exception is the Church of England. In a small number of Anglican churches, the vicar is employed and paid by the local landowner.

Tithes for the most part, as well as donations from parent organizations and public/private benefactors (rich people/corporations). Most churches ask a 10% tithe of their followers. This is for everything from activities to fixed overhead.

Some churches are very fiscally frugal (Mormon, Catholic) where the priests do not take any salary other than room and board. Other churches (Evangelical, Baptist) allow pastors to drive Cadillacs and live in $400k homes when they have no other income.

Also note that most churches are tax-exempt so pay no income or property taxes.

Marnie C is wrong. All the cash is raised either by the central organization of the church / mosque or/& by the congregation itself. In the case of refurbishing such places councils can give grants if the building is of cultural significance, the Lotto can also give money. None of it comes from income tax or VAT.

Funds for church construction comes from the membership and the church it's self. The church may get a long term construction loan from lending institutions. Remember that, all churches are tax exempt which leads to lucrative yearly savings and which allows them to amass billions in assets. The Catholic see of Los Angeles had at their last published figures several years ago, had assets valued in excess of five billion dollars. Saving souls is a lucrative business.

It appears that lottery money (good causes) was used to build the closed Finsbury Park mosque and its adjoining property. This being the case, the property ownership will remain with the related UK government agency. Our friend Abbu, well we the taxpayer pay his wages.

Churches get money from the government. Mosques get their money by donations from worshippers.

When I went to Church - baptist- the congregation paid. Perhaps its the same - maybe government funding if there is no separation in those countries...but I'm gonna put my money on the people who worship in those places.
