Am I the only person who feels that there's just no more talent in the movie business? I'm not talking actors... I'm talking the actual concept of a movie. It seems that instead of actually writing something creative, the writers have opted to just sit on their collective lazy asses and rehash old programs and movies.

The big Hollywood studios nowadays live on copying ideas and making innumerable sequels - on those they spend a lot of money, that's why they take no risk - the result is BOREDOM. But meanwhile, every big studio has purchased or created its own (so called) indie studio (Sony Classics etc.) or produces films in collaboration with indie studios - on those they spend less money and can take a higher risk - the result is more interesting films. On the other hand, it is getting harder to distinguish between (increasingly less courageous) indie and mainstream films and indie directors often try to make a film that is their ticket to Hollywood's big studios, eg. Kevin Smith. It's a game of constant give an take. Hollywood is already changing again: Paramount kicked out Cruise - that might be just the start of the end of the 1990's star-era, just like Heaven's Gate ringed in the end of the director's era that was ringed in in the late 1960s by the brat pack and directors like Coppola and Altman. Just wait and Hollywood will present a new era - I'm interested what this one will be like. Hopefully, nothing like the producers' era in the 1980s...... Confusing? It is....

It's the self-fulfilling cycle. Studios don't want to gamble, they want guaranteed returns on their investment to keep investors and shareholders happy- the sad truth is they are in the business of making money, not making great movies. They don't want to stray from the proven formulas that worked in the past. They are risk-averse and therefore innovation-averse.

It's really a dinosaur slowly starving. But I don't think Bollywood is the future, except maybe across Asia, supplanting Hong Kong I could see happening. Advances in technology are putting movie-making power into the hands of almost everyone. Digital video capability is becoming so widespread and affordable that home-grown efforts are probably where most entertainment is eventually headed. I think they're lazy, or at least too cowardly to take any risks. When I see some of the stuff that comes out in independent movies, and some of the things I read, I know there's no lack of ideas. But they keep making the same predictable garbage over and over again.

I totally agree with you. Where is the imagination, where is the innovation, where is are the leading when who aren't afraid to do their own stunts, where are the risky movies that could flop or could blow up?

Nowadays there seem to be two types of movies - remakes of past hits, or trilogies from first hits. What is the deal with CGI? If I see one more CGI monster in a movie - well, I will be even more peeved than I am now!
