The specific defense mechanism you are referring to is called projection. I see it very often in prominent republicans - they are always accusing others of the very thing they are doing.
When we can't tolerate something about ourselves, we project it on to others and condemn them. There are many other coping mechanisms, and not everyone uses projection.

What an interesting question. I think low self-esteem and the fact that we have some pressure from society to be perfect (and I dont just mean in looks) and successful are partly to fault. I dont think alot of people teach their children that it is okay to not be perfect. Screwing up is okay.... not being perfect is okay... everyone sins... everyone lies... everyone has some imperfection that they cant live with. People sort of are taught to not take responsibility for themselves. I believe that if you make a mistake then change yourself for it... be better for it... fess up and get it over with. Dont hide behind someone else by blaming them or insulting them... dont be a bully. I do think that if we had more people who taught others how to just accept their mistakes and issues then the mirror would be pretty well used.

Yes, its called taking responsibility for oneself. However these days it does not seem to be very much in style. The Catholic church, of which I am not a part, used to call it examining the conscience. This practice for many seems to have gone the way of .25 cent hamburgers and the Latin Mass. Why look at yourself when you can blame another race or religion, society, your parents, your ex, drugs, cigarettes, or booze? And lawyers are more than willing to assist you!

You are the only responsible for whatever happens in your life. Other people are just mediums for you to bear the fruit of your good decision and action or atone for your wrong deeds. You only get what you deserve in life so, you shouldn't blame others when you are upset or sad. you should accept tings that way!

Because we are egotistical assholes. Apparantly the more we adore our reflection in the mirror the more self absorbed we become. BREAK ALL MIRRORS!
