do not use soap! if they are a natural hair brush always use any mild shampoo. (like baby shampoo) Rinse thoroughly. this is how I clean my paint brushes and it keeps them like new.

First, shake your brushes out and get as much of the make-up off as you can. Then fill a small container with purified spring water and/or a facial rinse. Whatever you do, add water to thin the solution and lessen irritation. Then dip each of the brushes into the solution and lift up over the side. Wipe each brush off and make a new solution for every 1-3 brushes- it depends how dirty the water is. Take the brush and lightly pat onto a towel and brush on to a piece of paper. Let air dry, and they are done! you should wash brushes about once every 2-3 months.

The following is taken from wikiHow. Hope this helps!
Know what sort of bristles you have. Makeup brushes come in different types. The two most common are sable brushes(used for powders) and nylon brushes(used for liquids/gels/mousses).
For sable brushes, mix lukewarm water with a drop of your chosen cleanser and swish it. Swish your brush through the foamy water and then dump the water out. Keep making a new mix and swishing the brush through it until the water no longer gets discolored.
Rinse the brush gently under softly flowing water. It is also ok to swish the brush through plain water in a separate cup.
If the brush is thick, gently squeeze it between a folded lint-free cloth.
Place the brush on a level surface to air dry, making sure the bristles hang freely over the edge.
For Nylon brushes... wet the brush and take a dollop of your chosen cleanser and gently work your cleanser into the bristles with your fingers. Do not rub up the shaft of the bristles, either go down repeatedly or gently rub from side to side.
Rinse under softly flowing water.
If the nylon brush is thick, it is ok to squeeze it between the folds of a lint-free cloth.
Place the brush on a level surface with the bristles hanging freely over the edge.

greater Virgin Olive Oil! placed it on a paper towel and then pass your brush around in it. Then wash it pointing down and use some shampoo (i take advantage of infant shampoo yet my sister has used familiar). I try this another week reason i placed on makeup regular.

dial soap.... or any other anibacterial soap. then set them out to dry.... my larger brushes like powder and blush take atleast a day to competely dry though. So after using them in the morning I set them to dry and they are fine to use the next morning. They also make make up brushes cleaner (MAC) but... antibacterial is cheap, easy, and I always have it around the house anyways..

I use my Neutrogena anti-residue formula shampoo to keep my makeup brushes clean. Most importantly, rinse, rinse, and rinse them again. It really works.
