It seems to me the best way to deal with abusive language (apart from reporting) is to ignore the question.

Pretty much. I try one or two times to respond, and see if someone is actually capable of and willing to discuss matters rationally. But at the point they inform me, by word or deed, that they are no longer open to new ideas or new information, they are no longer worth my time.

Sadly to say reporting may sound like a good idea, but I've found that it usually doesn't work. Yahoo never takes anything seriously, I don't know if its because of the large number of traffic they get to their sights or if they truly don't care. I've been using yahoo chats and services since I was about 15 I'm 23 now and I have to provide you with what I've experienced. I've reported many people for abuse whether it be language, treats, stalking, hacking, or illegal sexual things. None of my reports were ever officially and properly resolved. You can go on with your reporting, please don't think that I'm saying there is no need to report. I commend you for doing this when its appropriate and it needs to be done to let Yahoo know problems with behavior making there services unsuccessful! However, all that I have got from yahoo is a automated responce telling you how to personally deal with abuse like ignoring it or ignoreing the person and that they will deal with any other problems which they never do. I was offically treatened to be killed and have my family killed as well by one yahoo user and they did nothing. Come to find out after I called the law in this area and provided them with information the person that said they were in Texas lived 14 miles from me and had my information all over their house. Yahoo didn't do anything I asked but the local cops did thankfully!. Sadly maybe with more reports of abuse yahoo may do more as it is changing.

I would suggest you just ignore any abuse, its the best thing to do and the easist. If you repond they only have more reason to keep up their childish actions. Good lucl and hope you find this to be helpful.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately myself. I'm kind of torn between believing it's walking into a trap and being convinced that a precise, direct response can actually jar the asker (even if not admittedly) into realizing their statements are transparent. I think probably that we're all being a little too stubborn; the asker to stop feeding off of the opposition and the responder to stop appeasing (both sides) with a caustic reply. It's just a hard habit to break if you're of the argumentative sort.

Yeah, it really depends on the questions asked. Either you can dignify or crucify him/her or it. You could answer his/her/it question with questions. The management can filter anytime what should be posted and what must not.

I have to admit I get pissed out with these idiots and their "libertards & republitard" questions. If you look it's always the same idiots who follow along and agree with them too!! I'm going to try and just start ignoring them you're right. It's not worth my time.

if you dignified an insult, wouldn't that be one for the other side

No, don't dignify it with an answer. It just feeds into our delusions of power.

you look at them like they're stupid and when ever they walk by snicker and shake your head .... sometimes it's best not to say anything unless you have something really witty and cutting at hand ... then unload !! (i know it's mean but they insulted you !!)
