They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Either way, the experts fall on the sword for making forecasts and predictions, whether they happen or not.
If they do report something and it doesn't happen, they are accused of causing confusion and panic. If they report something and it does materialize, and people are injured or killed, then they are accused of treating it too lightly or reporting it too late

What, like the experts saying cigarettes were a major cause of cancer? How about those football experts who picked the Steelers to win the Super Bowl last year? Political experts who predicted Iraq would remain a mess for years?
Nature doesn't sit around waiting to comply with expert or amateur predictions, it simply continues with its processes- the better your experts the better your chances of preparing effectively. Experts simply let us know what the most probable events are based upon the accumulated data- it doesn't mean we can't get lucky once in awhile.
If we catch a break on hurricanes, that's a GOOD thing. If Asian nations weren't already implementing Bird Flu prevention and containment measures, it would ruin our party a lot sooner. Hopefully the strain mutates differently than projected and we can dodge that bullet.
An expert is someone from out of town :)

Dude ... wow ... no "expert" said SARS was going to kill us. I don't know what microbiologist you talked to. As far as Bird Flu, once again, what is your source? The Microbiology instructor I have learned from has cautioned everyone about getting into the hype of the media. Bird Flue has not mutated, and it seems unlikely now, that it can be spread from human to human. I think you need to talk to, or read some of the expert information. Talk to a climatologist. I think you need allot more education ... then maybe you can become an Expert on Media Hype.

Karl Rove will probably mail out some more anthrax this week to keep the fear alive,,,, if God wants the Islamic Fascists destroyed, he will wipe them out with a tsunami, an earthquake, tornadoes or hurricanes, perhaps he will send a message to Bush and zip through Crawford and Kennebunkport

Yeah, actively listening to the expert-of-the-day is a TOTAL waste of time. Treat it as background noise that you need to lightly listen to in the back of your mind while you go about your business and you'll be treating it for what it's worth.

I want to be an expert when I grow up.
Seems like it doesn't take a whole lot of education or smarts to be an expert.
