A private sale is always "as-is" unless there is a written warranty offered by the seller (which almost never happens). If the vehicle is still under the factory new car warranty, that can sometimes be transfered to a second owner, usually for a fee.

It looks like you are going to have to pay for the repairs yourself!

If there is not a warranty on the vehicle, then I think you would have to be the one responsible for repairs.
