I'm most familiar with the term in New York to mean someone who is paid to walk with you, as a professional escort to social functions. And that's not legal.

I'll assume you're talking about a physical device to help someone walk. Is it on the NY list of restricted medical equipment, or is it something you can get 'over-the-counter' in a pharmacy or dept store? If the latter, then it's probably OK.
