A stingray got frightened when he swam over it. It's tail shot up and the barb at the end of the tail entered through his lower rib cage and punctured his heart. Stingray bites are rarely fatal, just painful. This was a freak accident.

My son just called me and told me about Crocodile Hunter - I think he said a stingray killed him (other than car, I have no clue what a stingray is). He said that Irwin was only 44.

sting ray off the coast of Australia. he was filming for a show on the discovery channel called world's deadliest. he swam too close to the sting ray, it got scared and the barb on the back of its tail hit him in the heart. he was already pronounced dead by the time he got to the hospital
