I put mine in the washer and dry it in the dryer after. Fill the washer up about 1/3 of the way with the setting for load size at the largest and add the detergent. Agitate the water to mix in the detergent. Then slowly add the comforter ensuring that it is evenly distributed around the drum. If you have any stains, treat them with a spotter before putting the comforter into the machine. Use a cold water setting and a heavy duty setting. If the comforter is particularly dirty, you may wish to use a soak setting. Once you have fed the comforter evenly around the agitator, fill the washer to the largest capacity with water. Some washers have a re-set which will allow you to add more water until the comforter is submerged. If your machine has it, use the second rinse cycle. Watch the machine carefully when it goes into the spin cycle. If you hear the machine off balance, stop the cycle and redistribute the comforter. Once the water is completely spun out of the comforter, put it in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls on the longest cycle at a medium setting. Now and again, open the dryer to redistribute the comforter. It may take more than one cycle to completely dry. You can add a fabric softener sheet or two in the dryer.

The 1st answer is exactly what I do except I use clean sneakers instead of tennis balls in the dryer :-) throw a couple nice smelling bounce sheets if you have them & it will turn out just great!
