I have used 58.3 GB of my 74.4 GB hard drive and would like to do some serious organizing and cleaning. I have *tons* of music, graphics, games, etc. What do you reccommend for storage? What is the most secure free site online? I don't want to have to copy everything to CDs. All advice is welcome!

What is disk cleaning and what did you mean by "compressing"?

You reallydon't want to be uploading lots of personal data. It's not nearly as fast as making CDs and it isn't always 100% secure.

Delete the things you no longer use.

Uninstall programs you haven't used in a long time.

Copy any older graphics, musci, and video to CDs if you don't access it regularly. Then remove the original from the hard drive.

Run the defragment program in Windows.

The bigger picture is that a 74 gig drive just isn't big enough for multimedia storage. You can get a huge drive for under $200.

I just reformatted my system. I put everything I needed to keep on about 6 data dvd. In general, you can have about 200 or so mp3 files on a cd. Multiply that by about 6 for a dvd. If you have a dvd writer, then I recommend that. If you have a cd writer, then it will take more cds. Organize everything together first. I put all games together, all applications together, and then broke that down further to fit on the dvd. That is the best way to start is by grouping stuff first.

There is not free on line backup that I have seen, if you don't like the cd option at least for the music files (they are usually large) you might just create a backup directory and compress it. Assuming you have already done the disk clean function

External hard drive is the way to go. Also, when you upgrade computer, you can easily transfer music, games and documents to the new machine.
