History tells us that the U.K. financial prosperity has come from looting other nations and their resources. India and South Africa are two recent time big examples. Since the country is ageing now, no more able to loot others, the sun is setting there. Becoming difficult for the nation to save its pride (which ever way it collected)!

The 'colonialism' answer is old hat. The empire ended decades ago and Britain has had some pretty bad economic years since then, esp. after WW2 and in the 1970s. The real answer is that in the 1980s Margaret Thatcher cut away a lot of government regulation of business which continues in Europe. This is why Britain was one of the EEC's worst-off countries when it joined in 1973 and is now one of the most prosperous in the EU with low unemployment and high growth. The Labour government has not undone the reforms she introduced. Her reforms had negative social implications, but that is a separate matter.

The United Kingdom is rich because it is the Financial centre of the World ! People say Financial centre of Europe, but it really is the whole world, why ? An agreement at Bretton Woods in 1944 which made the GBP sterling the worlds strongest currency to this day! Look at any chart comparison of sterling to other currencies, it has the highest exchange rate of them all, along with the US dollar and now the Euro as well. These are the main hard currencies in the world today, eveything else is soft by comparison. The U.K is in reality the worlds banker and with Lloyds of London, the worlds insurer as well ! thats it.
