I've tried uninstalling and rebooting to let my machine detect the drive again. I've looked at the systems manager and it says there it is working OK. But I can't copy anything to my CDR disc - I just get that message and I get the same message when I click on that drive. How can I get my CD drive to work? I have a Toshiba and am on Windows XP.

It's definitely D:\. This isn't weird, its a genuine question - I really want to be able to access my D drive!

OK. I now have 'files ready to be written to the CD' with the list of all the picture files I want to put there. But when I get the CD writing wizard it tells me there is no disc in the drive, even though there is. I've tried 3 different discs. How do I find drive e:\?

First, if its a CDR (Compact Disk Read), you cant copy any files on a CD, it would have to be a CDWR (Compact Disk Write and Read), another thing, you might not have installed the drivers for it yet, try installing the software they gave you with the CD drive or with your computer, there should be the drivers for it.
Drivers are small programs that tell the computer how a component ( like your CD drive) work, so that it can use it correctly.
Another thing, try checking for the options, there are some options that you can change ( like Allow Burning CDs or something like that) that sometimes need changing and change for themselves.
If I helped you, choose me as besta answer, I kind of need the points, well, thanx and good luck

I had exactly the same problem with my Dad's new computer. Nothing would play or record onto the D:\ drive. I checked I was using the correct CDRs, I used different CDRs, I tried playing pre recorded DVDs, but no joy. I thought " The D:\ drive is broken I need a new one." After many long calls to the help line who were very good and had me trying everything under the sun, they too decided that my D:\ drive was toast and that I would need another. (why didn't they listen to me??!!) A courier came and collected the PC, the service centre put a new one in, and now it works fine.
Incidentally the exact same thing happened to my laptop and the D:\ drive had to replaced in it too.

Is your computer a lap top or a pre installed tower/desk top you can not use drive letter d:/ as you have a c:\ and a d:\ partition on your drive the d:\ drive is your where your system recovery software is placed as a write protect drive this drive is a hidden drive your cd/dvd drive is therefore asigned as drive e:\ to install try the command e:\
to view this drive do the following
Menu bar at the top/folder options/view/select show hidden files/untickbox hide protected operating system files you will see the hidden folders on your system you should also see drive d:\ DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING FOUND IN THIS DRIVE or you can not recover your computer if anything goes wrong with it you will have to send it back to Toshiba to OEM install it for which you will be charged

Again, try using a software to write things on the CD-R, Windows may not support that beand or type of CD, so try using any CD writing software, such as Nero or Roxio, Hope i Helped.

"Incorrect funtion" normally means that the drive has sent information to the disk, but it did not answer. That is usually a bad disk, not a bad drive. Try a different CD.
