You just can't beat a dozen long stem red roses in a nice vase.

While all men seem to think that woman like roses, the truth is that roses don't last long, so most women like a nice bouquet of mixed flowers. A few roses can be added to the arrangement for a romantic touch. As a florist, I usually advise that men select the hardy cut flowers and we put in 3 or 6 roses. Also, a tropical arrangement of bird of paradise, ginger, coffee beans, ti leaves and a few other cut flowers is always nice. These usually last well, too.

From a guys stand point. I think plants, "flowers" are the best and the occasion would determine the type of flower. Personally I like the tropical bright colored flowers in reds and yellows and purples etc to give as gifts. They usually live for quite awhile and require very little maintance. At times a single long stem rose with babies breath and a vase along with a simple card makes a simple and impressionable note when I just want to say to to my female friends ," Hey" I had you in my thoughts today, hope you are doing well. Any flowers are nice, but if I had a choice, I'd prefer a pretty mixed bouquet. Surprise me! Florist roses have no fragrance; if I get roses, I want a bouquet of old-fashioned fragrant ones from someone's garden!
I also like a flowering plant, such as a Calamondin orange (breathtakingly fragrant!) or an azalea.

My absolute favorite are Star Gazer Lilies. They are beautiful and smell wonderful. Just ask the florist to remove the stamen that yellow thingy in the middle that falls out and can stain your table cloth or clothes.
Of course roses and sunflowers are awesome too.

Anything that is personalized. Find out what the girl likes. If you can't, either something really different or off the wall (like sunflowers) or the old stand-by roses is always a safe bet!

Orchids are my favorite flowers to receive, because they are beautiful, unique and last a long time. They are also classy. Roses are always nice to receive as well, they seem to express special feelings.

Wife's favorite flower is actually the Daffodil. She really does not even like roses!

I love carnations because 1) they smell good, 2) with florist dye they can come in absolutely any color and 3) they last a very long time 4) they aren't expensive so my husband buys them for me every couple of weeks.
