In their native habitat, African Violets grow under the jungle canopy thus do prefer lower light that other blooming plants. A north facing window is excellent.
African Violets also react to tight shoes, ( small pot) which stimulates blooming as it creates the impression that the plant may soon grow out of it's current home and maybe even die. Sort of like root pruning in a vineyard. If the pot is too big the plant will put all of its energy into filling that pot with roots before it will bloom again.
They are heavy feeders and need a high middle number on the fertilizer ratio.
It is also good to remove blooms as they fade, so as to prevent seeds from setting and putting the plant on maternity leave - will not bloom while seed pod is developing.
Your African Violet will also slow down blooming if it is allowed to "sucker", as in new plants growing from the base of the original.
It really is all about reproduction and plants are in the know.
The only real concern with watering is not to get the cown wet - as it is fuzzy and will rot very easily. If you do get water on a leaf just dab it with a paper towel or tissue. I water from the top because if the potting mix is too dry it will not wick the water up.

Once an african violet starts to bloom, it should continue to do so for quite some time. My guess is that you have the plants in too sunny a place in your house. Try moving the plants to another location. Also make sure they are not by radiators. Also make sure your plants receive sufficient water during their blooming period. Watering from the bottom? I did that at first with my african violets but they were not getting enough water. Now I water from the top but avoid getting water on the leaves. I have grown beautiful african violets and the blooming lasts for several months. Individual blooms do die, however -- don't expect them to live on and on.
