Sore throat? At times, yeah. But if it's raging, you might wan't to have it checked for an infection.
For a mild case of the cold or flu, it's not always necessary to take medication; do get lots of rest. Increase your fluid intake (only water, tea, and natural juices). Eat a lot of fruits and salads, and absolutely avoid junk/fried food.
If after a day you don't feel like you've improved, take some tylenol or nyquil.
That should help you out in a big way. If you don't get well after some time, though, best to have yourself checked up.

Because the cold and flu are caused by viruses, the best thing to do is take care of the symptoms. Rest, take in plenty of fluids and nutritious foods, and down over-exert yourself. Your doctor can prescribe an antiviral if the illness becomes severe. Tylenol and Motrin for fever... Honey/lemon juice mixtures for a sore throat. However, I think it's a little early for the flu right now, so you're probably experiencing a common cold. If the symptoms get worse, you develop a horrible cough, or persist longer than a few days, you should seek your doctor's advice. If you have difficulty breathing, call 911.

Listen to GD.
Gargle with warm salt water at the FIRST sign of a sore throat. Viruses/bacteria/germs can't live with it.
I follow that up with some Nyquil before I go to bed and by morning I'm better. Cheers!
