The red eye effect is caused by the light from a flash being reflected by the retina (back of the eye), which is red. The pupil is just a hole, so the light from flash passes through it and bounces back off the retina. It only happens if a flash is used, and only if the person is looking directly at the camera.

It is called 'red eye' and if the photo was taken with a digital camera, most computer programmes have a means by which it can be removed.
To prevent it when taking the photograph with a flash, ask the one being photographed to look slightly away from the camera lens. It helps a lot.............

What you are seeing is actually the back of the eye, the retina, lit up from the flash. The retina has a large blood supply, which is why it looks red.
Red-eye-reduction options on camera produce a series of flashes first, which causes your pupil to decrease in diameter. So when the picture is taken with the actual flash, less light enters the eye, and less of the retina can be seen.

The flash reflects off the back of the eye. It is red because of the blood supply to the eye.

you know white light breaks into major 7 colors and at the moment of flash the eye ball angle acts like mirror and breaks flash light into multispektrums and only visible red spektrum get recorded on the photo imaging.
or our eye able to recognize only red spektr from the broken multi spektras thus it looks like red eye.

It's a reflection of the flash. The redness is caused by the colour of blood.
